Sing for Your Barra

In 2006, Argyle Diamonds were announced as the naming right sponsor of the Ord Valley Muster. As part of their three year partnership, Argyle committed to adding a further dimension to the Muster by boosting the festival’s Indigenous content. This led to the creation of the Argyle Diamonds Barramundi Concert. Showcasing a diverse selection of Indigenous musical talent from across the Kimberley, this family-oriented event has become a popular highlight on the Muster’s annual calendar.

In 2008 the Barramundi Concert returns with a new line-up and venue. Enjoy a stirring welcome from our traditional land-owners, followed by a night of exceptional Indigenous entertainment. If country, rock and folk music are your passion, pack a picnic and head to the Kununurra Picture Gardens on Saturday May 10. Entry is $2 adults and $1 students.

Please note, the Argyle Diamonds Barramundi Concert is an alcohol free event.

Story Time

Sharing Our Stories is a Kimberley success story! Launched in 2006 by Librarian, Anne Devenish, the program is designed to bring Indigenous and non-Indigenous people together to interact and learn from each other’s life experiences.

Enjoy an early morning cruise along the Ord River aboard Kununurra Cruises, indulge in a sumptuous cooked breakfast, and witness traditional storytelling as three local Indigenous people share their experiences living in the Kimberley. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to learn about the rich culture of our traditional land owners whilst taking in the sights and sounds of the beautiful Ord River.

Three Pointer

Garnduwa is the peak Indigenous sporting body in the Kimberley and is responsible for the development of local, regional, state and national participation in sport and recreation activities by Indigenous people.

For the past three years, Garnduwa has hosted its annual Basketball Carnival during the Ord Valley Muster. The carnival brings together teenagers from remote Kimberley communities for a weekend of friendly competition and fun. Don’t miss seeing the talent and skill of the year’s competitors as they battle it out to claim the Carnival trophy on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 May from 9am to 6pm.

Kimberley Art

The rugged and remote north-western corner of Australia produces a treasure-trove of Aboriginal art. You’ll be spoiled for choice as the town’s leading galleries open their doors with a range of events during this year’s Muster. Here’s just a taste:

Red Rock Art Gallery will unveil a new exhibition Colours of the Kimberley on Thursday May 15. Renowned artists Jeannette Dyson and Nellie Gordon will display their hand-ground Kimberley ochre collection to invited guests and visitors. Tickets are $25 per person including gourmet finger foods and beverages.

Waringarri Aboriginal Arts, the first wholly aboriginal owned art centre established in the east Kimberley region, will host a Sundown Corroboree and Exhibition on Thursday May 8. View the works of Alan and Peggy Griffith, Judy Mengil, Phyllis Ningarmara and many other local artists and enjoy a traditional corroboree performance from the Miriwoong people. Afterwards enjoy a tasty supper of beef and damper from the open fire. Tickets are $15 each and are available from the gallery.

For a non-Indigenous artistic interpretation of the Kimberley, visit the Lovell Diversion Gallery. View the inspiring works of owner and curator Nadeen Lovell, alongside colourful pieces by Kimberley Kohan and a range of other artists. This year Nadeen will unveil the much anticipated 16 by 2 metre mural - Beyond the Beehives at a special celebration on Friday May 9. Tickets are $30 each, including beverages and finger food.
